Believe
the hype. Coolangatta kid Mick Fanning is the most exciting surfer in
the world.
Speed to burn... Lightning
fast moves executed with flow and style... Mick's ability is freakish,
and it took him to a top-five finish in his debut year on surfing's elite
World Championship Tour (WCT) in 2002.
Fanning fired in South Africa, winning in epic conditions at J-Bay, and
finished the year by making the final of the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii,
claiming the Rookie of the Year award in the process.
Mick honed his skills amongst
a hotbed of talent on Australia's Gold Coast, between the punchy beach
breaks of D'bah and the grinding world class points of Kirra and Burleigh.
He has an all round class act, and runs with a small, close knit crew
who are the future of Australian surfing, including arch-rival and close
friend Joel Parkinson.
In
1999 Mick made some marks that set him apart from the junior pack. Seven
skins in a row at the Konica Super Skins event at Sandon Point netted
him $21,000 and proved he could mix it with the world's elite after beating
Occy, Luke Egan, Beau Emerton, Dooma Hardman and Davo along the way.
He then claimed the prestigious HB/OE Pro Junior title at Narrabeen and
followed it with a win the next week at the Jetty Surf Pro Junior at Bells
Beach.
